La Cangreja National Park, officially established in 2002, encompasses 2,570 hectares (6,349 acres) of protected land in the Puriscal Canton of Costa Rica. The park's name derives from Cerro La Cangreja, the highest peak within its borders, which resembles a crab when viewed from certain angles. Local legend tells of a giant crab that was turned to stone after battling a warrior, forming the mountain itself. The park is a haven for biodiversity, boasting over 300 species of birds, including migratory species, and is a critical habitat for wildlife in the Central Valley. La Cangreja is home to diverse animal species, including white-faced monkeys, coatis, agoutis, pumas, and various snake species. The park also protects over 1,000 plant species, including 44 endemic to Costa Rica. Notably, it is the only place in the world where the Plinia puriscalensis tree grows, bearing fruit directly from its trunk. Visitors can explore the park's natural beauty through its hiking trails, which lead to waterfalls, rivers, and scenic overlooks. The Río Negro trail, a 6-kilometer (3.7-mile) path, is a popular route that crosses rivers and streams, offering opportunities for birdwatching and wildlife spotting. The park's diverse ecosystems, ranging from tropical wet forest to pre-montane moist forest, contribute to its unique ecological significance.
