Discover more about Parque Central de San José

Parque Central de San José, historically known as Plaza Principal, has been the vibrant heart of Costa Rica's capital since its transformation in 1885. This expansive urban park, characterized by its lush greenery and well-maintained pathways, serves as a central hub for locals and tourists alike. Visitors can enjoy leisurely strolls under the shade of towering trees, with the sounds of nature harmonizing with the lively atmosphere of city life. Over time, trees sprouted, pathways and internal sidewalks were laid, an iron fountain graced the center, and a surrounding fence arose. In 1920, concrete benches took root, making it the capital's oldest public space, adorned with ornamental efforts. By 1944, during President Teodoro Picado's tenure, a reinforced concrete kiosk emerged, designed by Catalan architect Víctor Sabater, who arrived in Costa Rica in the early 1940s. Eclectically influenced, its architecture is believed to be a gift from former Nicaraguan President Anastasio Somoza García. The park evolved, last revamped in the early 1990s under President Rafael Ángel Calderón Fournier, echoing interventions in other downtown parks like Braulio Carrillo, España, and Morazán. The park is adorned with historical monuments and statues, reflecting the rich cultural heritage of San José, making it not only a place of relaxation but also a site of historical significance. As you wander through this enchanting space, you will encounter numerous benches perfect for resting while soaking in the sights and sounds around you. The park is often lively with locals engaging in various activities, from playing games to practicing yoga, creating a dynamic environment that captures the essence of Costa Rican culture. Additionally, on weekends, you may find local vendors selling traditional snacks and crafts, providing a taste of local flavors and artistry.
