The Sanctuaire Marial National, also known as Notre-Dame-d'Afrique d'Abidjan, stands as a beacon of faith and architectural innovation in the Attécoubé district of Abidjan. This Catholic shrine is a major pilgrimage destination in Côte d'Ivoire, drawing visitors seeking spiritual solace and those who appreciate modern religious art. The shrine's history began in the 1970s when local Christians in Cité Fairmont lacked a nearby parish. Cardinal Bernard Yago envisioned a place of worship dedicated to the Virgin Mary, leading to the laying of the first stone on February 2, 1985. The Sanctuaire Marial was inaugurated on February 1, 1987. The construction was financially supported by President Félix Houphouët-Boigny. In 2012, the shrine was officially recognized as a national sanctuary by the Episcopal Conference of Ivory Coast.The shrine's design, the work of Italian architect Aldo Spirito, is striking. A 53-meter conical bell tower dominates the site, featuring reinforced concrete and blue-painted helical roofs that provide natural ventilation. Inside, the main church can accommodate 800 people and displays artwork by Paul Siaka Coulibaly, including sculptures of the Virgin Mary represented as an Ivorian woman. A stained-glass window at the tower's summit depicts the Virgin Mary in Assumption.Open daily from morning to evening, the Sanctuaire Marial welcomes visitors of all faiths. It is a place for quiet contemplation, prayer, and appreciation of its unique architecture. The shrine also holds regular services and religious gatherings, serving as a vibrant hub for the local community.
