Discover more about St. Paul's Cathedral

St. Paul's Cathedral (Cathédrale Saint-Paul d'Abidjan) is a Roman Catholic cathedral located in the Plateau district of Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire. Designed by Italian architect Aldo Spirito, it serves as the mother church for the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Abidjan. The first stone was laid in 1980 by Pope John Paul II, and he consecrated the completed cathedral in 1985.The cathedral's architecture is both unique and modern, intended to reflect the aspirations of the Ivorian people. The concrete cross is anchored to the main cathedral using seven cables, creating the illusion that the structure is being drawn towards the Ébrié Lagoon. The exterior features colorful ceramic panels depicting the story of Christ. Inside, six stained-glass windows, also designed by Spirito, depict biblical stories interwoven with Ivorian people, landscapes, and animals. The interior also includes paintings of the Virtues, mosaics of the Sacraments, and twelve panels made in polychrome ceramics. The cathedral has a total area of 4,300 square meters and can accommodate up to 5,000 people. Visitors can climb the tower (230 steps) to the balconies in the outstretched arms of the cross for panoramic views of Abidjan. St. Paul's Cathedral has served as a refuge for people fleeing violence, offering shelter to approximately 1,800 Ivorians during the 2010-2011 Ivorian crisis.Mass in English is held every Sunday at 11 am in the chapel.
