Discover more about Stradun

Stradun, also called Placa, is Dubrovnik's most famous and important street. This pedestrian-only avenue runs through the heart of the Old Town, connecting the Pile Gate on the west to the Ploče Gate on the east. Before the 13th century, the site of Stradun was a marshy channel separating the settlements of Ragusa and Dubrava. The channel was filled in, and Stradun became the city's main street. The street's current appearance largely dates back to the rebuilding after the devastating 1667 earthquake. The earthquake destroyed most of the buildings, leading to a uniform architectural style with shops on the ground floor and residences above. Today, the limestone pavement is polished smooth by centuries of foot traffic. Stradun is the focal point for many of Dubrovnik's major events and festivals, including the Feast of Saint Blaise, the city's patron saint. It's also a popular spot for New Year's Eve celebrations and occasional concerts. Walking along Stradun offers a captivating glimpse into Dubrovnik's rich history and vibrant culture. The street is lined with cafes, shops, and restaurants, making it a bustling center for both locals and tourists. Notable landmarks along Stradun include the Church of St. Blaise, and the Rector's Palace.
