Discover more about Stradun Dubrovnik

Stradun, also called Placa, is more than just a street; it's the beating heart of Dubrovnik. This iconic thoroughfare stretches 300 meters through the Old Town, connecting the Pile Gate on the west to the Ploče Gate on the east. What was once a marshy channel separating two settlements was filled in the 11th century, becoming the city's main street. Paved with limestone in 1468, Stradun's surface has been smoothed by countless feet over the centuries. The street's current appearance largely dates back to the rebuilding efforts following the devastating 1667 earthquake. Prior to the earthquake, the buildings lining Stradun featured more varied designs with arcades and decorations. After the earthquake, regulations were put in place to ensure a uniform look, resulting in the harmonious late-Renaissance architecture seen today. Stradun is the focal point of Dubrovnik's social and cultural life. It serves as a promenade for locals and tourists alike, lined with cafes, shops, and restaurants. Many of Dubrovnik's historical buildings and monuments are located along Stradun, including the Church of St. Blaise and the Rector's Palace. The street also hosts major events and festivals, such as the procession for the Feast of Saint Blaise, Dubrovnik's patron saint, held every February 3rd.
