    Discover more about Euphrasian Basilica

The Euphrasian Basilica, officially the Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption of Mary, stands as the most valuable cultural monument in Poreč. Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1997, this early-Christian complex represents one of the best-preserved landmarks of its kind from that era.Constructed in the 6th century under Bishop Euphrasius during the reign of Emperor Justinian I, the basilica showcases a remarkable blend of Byzantine art and architecture. The basilica complex includes the church itself, a sacristy, an octagonal baptistery dating back to the 5th century, a 16th-century bell tower offering panoramic views, a colonnaded atrium, and the Episcopal Palace. The basilica is celebrated for its stunning mosaics, particularly those in the apse, which depict Christ with the Apostles and the Virgin Mary with the Child. These mosaics, created by Byzantine masters, along with the floor mosaics crafted by local experts, contribute significantly to the basilica's artistic and historical value. Bishop Euphrasius himself is portrayed in one of the mosaics, holding a model of the basilica. Visitors can also explore the remains of earlier sacred buildings, including floor mosaics from the 4th century.
