Discover more about Temple of Augustus

The Temple of Augustus is a captivating historical landmark located in the heart of Pula, Croatia, in the main city square known as the Forum. This remarkably well-preserved Roman temple is dedicated to the first Roman Emperor, Augustus, and the goddess Roma, embodying the city's rich Roman heritage. Constructed between 2 BC and AD 14, the year of Augustus's death, the temple exemplifies classical Roman architecture. Originally, the Temple of Augustus was part of a triad of temples in the Forum. The other two were the central temple dedicated to the Capitoline Triad (Jupiter, Juno, and Minerva) and the Temple of Diana. Today, only the back wall of the Temple of Diana remains, having been incorporated into the Communal Palace in 1296. The central temple was lost due to early Christian opposition to pagan structures. The Temple of Augustus has a classic Corinthian prostyle tetrastyle design, featuring a porch with four marble columns. The columns are elaborately adorned, particularly at the top. The temple's structure includes a cella (sanctuary), a columned facade, and an enclosed space, constructed from precisely cut stone blocks. Measuring 17 meters in length and 8 meters in width, it boasts a beautiful frieze and sculptures. Throughout its history, the temple has served various purposes. With the decline of the Roman Empire, it was repurposed as a church and later as a grain storage facility. In the 19th century, it housed a museum of stone monuments. During World War II, the temple suffered significant damage from a bomb. However, it was meticulously restored by Italian archaeologists between 1945 and 1947. Today, the Temple of Augustus functions as a museum, showcasing a collection of ancient Roman sculptures and artifacts discovered in Pula and the surrounding Istrian region. Visitors can admire Roman scale models, mosaics, and sculptures.
