Discover more about Piazza della Borsa

Piazza della Borsa is a captivating square located in the heart of Trieste, Italy. Often considered the city's second most important square after Piazza Unità d'Italia, it stands as a testament to Trieste's rich history and cosmopolitan spirit. For centuries, this elegant plaza has been a crossroads of commerce, culture, and social life. The square's name, meaning "Stock Exchange Square," reflects its origins as the economic heart of Trieste during the 18th and 19th centuries. During this time, Trieste was a major seaport under the Habsburg Empire, and the square became the epicenter of financial activity. Merchants, bankers, and shipping magnates gathered here to make deals and shape the fortunes of the Adriatic. The Palazzo della Borsa Vecchia, or Old Stock Exchange Building, dominates the square. Completed in 1806, it was one of the first buildings in Trieste dedicated solely to economic affairs. Its neoclassical facade, adorned with stately columns and topped by sculptures representing trade and navigation, remains a symbol of the city's mercantile legacy. Today, the building houses the Trieste Chamber of Commerce, Industry, Crafts and Agriculture. In addition to the Palazzo della Borsa Vecchia, the square features other notable buildings, including the Art Nouveau Casa Bartoli, designed by Max Fabiani in 1905, and the Palazzo del Tergesteo, an ancient covered gallery built in 1842 that connects Piazza della Borsa to Piazza Giuseppe Verdi. A stone column supporting a statue of Leopold I of Austria, whose son established the free port of Trieste, also stands in the square. Piazza della Borsa is not merely a relic of the past; it's a vibrant public space where locals and tourists gather. The square is lined with cafes and restaurants, making it a popular spot for enjoying a meal or a drink. It also hosts events and markets, adding to its dynamic character.
