Discover more about Twin Gate

The Twin Gate, or Porta Gemina, stands as a testament to Pula's rich Roman heritage. Constructed in the 2nd century AD, it was one of ten gates that once provided entry into the Roman city of Pola. The gate derives its name from its distinctive double archway, designed to facilitate the simultaneous passage of pedestrians and vehicles.Over the centuries, Pula transformed, and many of its ancient gates were torn down to accommodate the growing city. However, the Twin Gate was preserved, offering a tangible connection to the ancient past. During the medieval period, the gate was buried underground to bolster the town's defenses, only to be excavated and restored later.Today, the Twin Gate serves as a pedestrian passage, leading visitors towards the Archaeological Museum, the Castle, and the Small Roman Theatre. A memorial plate dedicated to Lucius Menacius Priscus, who funded the construction of Pula's water supply, is mounted on the gate. The gate is adorned with three semi-columns featuring composite capitals and a relief wreath.
