The Gate of Hercules, or Herkulova Vrata, is a captivating historical landmark in Pula, Croatia, marking the city's oldest Roman gate. Constructed from roughly hewn stone blocks during the foundation of the city between 47 and 44 BC, the gate offers a tangible connection to Pula's ancient past.Architecturally unassuming, the single-arched gate is named for the worn relief of Hercules, the mythical hero, and his club, which can be seen at the arch's top. Hercules was considered the guardian of ancient Pula. Close to the club, a damaged inscription bears the names of Lucius Calpurnius Piso and Gaius Cassius Longinus, Roman officials entrusted with establishing a Roman colony at Pula. Lucius Calpurnius Piso was Julius Caesar's father-in-law, while Gaius Cassius Longinus was the brother of Cassius who took part in Caesar's assassination.Standing at approximately 4 meters high, with an entrance 3.60 meters wide, the Gate of Hercules provides passage to the Italian Community in Pula. Unearthed in the 19th century, like the Twin Gates, the gate underwent cleaning and conservation in the 1930s. Today, it serves as a compelling reminder of Pula's Roman heritage and a testament to the city's layered history.
