The Church and Monastery of St. Francis, located on the western slope of Pula hill, stands as a testament to the city's rich history and spiritual heritage. Founded in the early 14th century, possibly in 1314, the complex was built to honor St. Francis of Assisi. The Franciscan community had been present in Pula since the 13th century. The church's architecture is a blend of Romanesque and Gothic styles, showcasing the skills of the craftsmen who constructed it. Inside, visitors can admire well-preserved frescoes from the 15th century depicting scenes from the life of St. Francis. The main altar features a gilded wooden polyptych from the mid-15th century, considered one of the most valuable works of Gothic sculpture in Istria. The monastery features a Gothic cloister built in the 15th century. The complex has served various purposes throughout its history, including use as a food store, kindergarten, and exhibition hall during periods of French and Austrian rule. Today, it has been restored to its original function, offering a place of peace and reflection. In the church garden, visitors can view ancient Roman sarcophagi, remnants of Pula's Roman past.
