Discover more about Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary

The Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, located on Trg Slobode (Liberty Square) in Umag, is a prominent religious and historical landmark. Records of the Umag parish date back to 929, but the exact year it was founded remains unknown. The church's history reflects changes in church jurisdiction, ultimately affiliating with the Diocese of Poreč and Pula in 1977. The original parish church, dedicated to the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary and St. Peregrine, was first mentioned in the 14th century. After being damaged in a storm in 1651, it was torn down and rebuilt in a neo-Palladian style, designed by Filippo Dongetti. Construction finished in 1757, and the church was consecrated in 1760, though its facade remains incomplete. The church and its detached 15th-century Venetian-style bell tower create a striking presence in Umag's main square. The single-nave church features six chapels with Baroque marble altars from the construction period, except for the sanctuary altar, which dates from 1994. The main altar showcases stone statues of St. Peregrine, the patron saint of the parish, and St. Nicéphore, sculpted by Antonio Bosa. Noteworthy interior elements include an organ made by F. Dazzi in 1776 (the third oldest in Istria), a Renaissance wooden relief “Pietà,” an altarpiece depicting the Baptism of Christ and Christ Resurrected, and three frescoes on the main nave ceiling, believed to be painted by Giuseppe Bernardino Bison in the late 18th century.
