Discover more about Lotrščak Tower

Lotrščak Tower, a well-preserved medieval structure in Zagreb's Upper Town (Gornji Grad), has been a sentinel over the city since the 13th century. Originally built in 1266 as part of the Gradec town walls, it guarded the southern gate. The tower's name comes from the Latin 'campana latrunculorum,' meaning 'thieves' bell,' which signaled the closing of the city gates. Over the centuries, the tower's appearance has evolved. In 1857, during a romantic restoration, two floors were added, along with a wooden fire lookout. Today, visitors can climb the tower's interior to reach the top, where they are rewarded with 360-degree views of Zagreb. A highlight of the tower is the Grič cannon, which has been fired daily at noon since January 1, 1877. This tradition, initially intended to signal the half-day mark to church bell-ringers, has become a beloved Zagreb institution. The cannon's boom is a familiar sound, and locals often set their watches by it. The tower also hosts art exhibits and has a gift shop on the ground floor.
