Discover more about House of Dionysus

The House of Dionysus is a highlight of the Paphos Archaeological Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site near Paphos Harbour. This Roman villa, constructed in the late 2nd century AD, showcases the luxurious lifestyle of its wealthy inhabitants through its elaborate mosaic floors. The villa was destroyed and abandoned in the 4th century AD, likely due to earthquakes. The villa spans 2,000 square meters, with 556 square meters adorned with incredibly detailed mosaics. These mosaics depict scenes from Greek mythology, hunting expeditions, and daily life, providing valuable insights into the cultural and artistic influences of the time. The villa is named after Dionysus because many mosaics depict scenes related to the god of wine. One notable mosaic portrays Dionysus riding a panther. Other significant mosaics showcase the myths of Pyramus and Thisbe, Poseidon and Amymone, and the metamorphosis of Daphne. The House of Dionysus features a central courtyard, or atrium, around which the rooms are arranged. This design reflects the typical layout of a Roman villa. At the entrance, a Hellenistic pebble mosaic depicting the sea monster Scylla is preserved from an earlier 3rd-century BC building, offering a glimpse into the artistic evolution from the Hellenistic to Roman periods. The Paphos mosaics are considered among the finest in the Eastern Mediterranean.
