Discover more about Basilica of Panagia Limeniotissa

The Basilica of Panagia Limeniotissa, meaning 'Our Lady of the Harbour,' stands as a ruined testament to early Christianity in Paphos, Cyprus. Constructed in the early 5th century during the Byzantine era, the basilica was initially composed of three aisles, two rows of marble columns, an apse, and a narthex. Its floors and walls were adorned with vibrant geometric mosaics. Over the centuries, the basilica faced numerous challenges. Arab raids in 653 AD resulted in near destruction, with the site repurposed as workshops, stables, and living quarters for the Arab garrison. A tower was even erected in the narthex, potentially serving as a watchtower, lighthouse, or minaret. Following the Arab retreat in 688 AD, the basilica was restored, albeit on a smaller scale. However, in 1159 AD, an earthquake, as recounted by Saint Neophytos, led to its destruction along with thirteen other churches in the Paphos district. A smaller structure was built, but it too was destroyed in 1222 by an earthquake. The basilica's exact location remained unknown until 1937, with official excavations commencing in 1959. Today, the Basilica of Panagia Limeniotissa is part of the Paphos Archaeological Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Visitors can explore the ruins, view the remaining columns, and admire the remnants of the colorful mosaics.
