Discover more about Basilica of Panagia Limeniotissa

The Basilica of Panagia Limeniotissa, or "Our Lady of the Harbour", is a captivating archaeological site located within the Paphos Archaeological Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Founded in the early 5th century during the Byzantine era, the basilica offers visitors a glimpse into Cyprus's early Christian heritage. Originally, the grand basilica featured three aisles adorned with rows of marble columns, a striking apse, and a narthex. Its walls and floors were embellished with vibrant mosaics showcasing intricate geometric patterns. However, the basilica faced numerous challenges throughout its history. In 653 AD, Arab raids caused near destruction, with the site repurposed as workshops and living quarters for a military garrison. A tower was even erected in the narthex, possibly serving as a watchtower or minaret. Following the Arab retreat in 688 AD, the basilica was restored, albeit on a smaller scale. However, in 1159 AD, an earthquake struck, leading to its destruction along with other churches in the Paphos region. The basilica's location remained unknown until 1937, with excavations in 1959 unearthing the structure, which then became part of the Paphos Archaeological Park. Today, visitors can explore the ruins, observe the mosaic floors, and admire the restored columns, while imagining the basilica's former glory as a significant center of Christian worship.
