Discover more about Pražská brána

The Pražská brána, also known as the Prague Gate or Upper Gate, stands as a proud testament to Znojmo's medieval past. Once the most important access point to the city, it formed part of Znojmo's robust fortifications. In the 13th century, the gate featured a vaulted passage within the inner walls, protected by a tall tower, similar to the Dolní brána (Lower Gate), though the tower no longer exists. During the second half of the 15th century, a barbican was gradually constructed in front of the gate. However, in the 19th century, the gate itself and most of the barbican were demolished. Today, only the central structure remains, a passable building with loopholes on the sides, now converted into a residential building. Located on náměstí Svobody (Freedom Square), the Pražská brána serves as a reminder of the city's strategic importance and architectural prowess during the medieval period. While the tower is gone, the remaining structure still evokes a sense of history and invites exploration of Znojmo's charming streets, lined with shops and cafes. Nearby attractions include the Znojmo Castle, offering stunning views, and the intricate Gothic and Renaissance architecture found throughout the city.
