Zelný trh (Cabbage Market): Brno's Historic Heart

Zelný trh, also known as the Cabbage Market, is a vibrant square in the heart of Brno, Czech Republic, with a rich history dating back to the 13th century. For centuries, this bustling marketplace has been the center of Brno's commercial and social life, offering a colorful array of fresh fruits, vegetables, flowers, and other local products. The square's name, meaning "Cabbage Market" in Czech, reflects its historical focus on produce. Even today, the market retains its traditional charm, providing visitors with an authentic taste of Czech culture. The market is typically open from spring to autumn, with a Christmas market taking its place during the winter months. Dominating the square is the Parnas Fountain, a monumental Baroque masterpiece created between 1690 and 1695. Designed by Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach, the fountain features allegorical figures and mythical animals, with a central cave housing a statue of Heracles. Another significant landmark is the Reduta Theatre, one of the oldest theatre buildings in Central Europe. The theatre has hosted performances since the 17th century and continues to be a cultural hub in Brno. A statue of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart stands in front of the theater, commemorating the concert he gave here as an 11-year-old prodigy in December 1767. Beneath the square lies a hidden world: the Labyrinth Under the Vegetable Market. These medieval cellars and passageways, dating back to the Baroque era, were once used for storing food, brewing beer, and sheltering during wartime.
