Discover more about Modravské slatě

Modravské Slatě, also known as Weitfällerfilze, is a captivating complex of upland peat bogs situated near Modrava within the Šumava National Park in the Czech Republic. Representing the largest continuous complex of peat bogs in the Bohemian Forest, it creates a unique and valuable ecosystem. These peat bogs began developing in headwater areas and shallow depressions at the end of the last glacial period, approximately 8,000 to 10,000 years ago. The Modravské Slatě lies at an elevation of approximately 1,000 meters on the windward side of the Šumava Mountains, characterized by a humid climate and high precipitation. The area features numerous structured raised bogs with small lakes and rugged, non-forested areas. These moors provide a valuable habitat for various species, including the Auerhuhn (wood grouse). Historically, the peat bogs were used for peat extraction and timber floating on the Roklanský potok. Today, Modravské Slatě is a protected area within the Šumava National Park, preserving its unique vegetation and wildlife. While much of the area is inaccessible to the public to protect its sensitive ecosystem, guided tours are available.
