Discover more about castle ruins Kunžvart

Kunžvart Castle, derived from Königswarte (King's Guard), stands on the rocky summit of Strážný Mountain, near the Czech-German border. At an altitude of 1,033 meters (3,389 feet), it's among the highest castles in the Czech Republic. Built in the early 14th century, the castle protected a trade route from Vimperk to Passau. King Charles IV documented the castle's existence in 1359. Kunžvart was once an impregnable stronghold, defended by rock walls and a deep moat. However, it was abandoned in 1547, and a fire in 1578 reduced it to ruins. Today, visitors can explore the remains of the squared tower, which once had three stories. The surrounding area offers hiking trails and natural beauty. The ruins are accessible via marked tourist paths from Strážný (approximately 3.5 km) and Horní Vltavice (approximately 9 km). The site provides a blend of historical exploration and natural immersion.
