Chalupská Slať: A Peat Bog Wonderland

Chalupská Slať (also known as Großer Königsfilz in German) is a remarkable peat bog located within the Šumava National Park, near the village of Borová Lada. This unique wetland, a transition between valley and mountain raised bogs, lies at an elevation of 910-950 meters. Covering 137 hectares, it is one of the most significant peat bogs in the Šumava region. The bog's origins trace back 8,000 to 10,000 years to the end of the Ice Age. A shallow lake gradually filled with reeds, sedges, and eventually sphagnum moss, forming the peat. The average peat depth is 1.9 meters, but it reaches 7 meters near the lake. The area holds approximately 2,340,000 cubic meters of peat. A 260-meter wooden boardwalk trail allows visitors to explore the bog without disturbing the delicate ecosystem. The trail leads to a viewing platform at the edge of Chalupské Lake, the largest peat lake in the Czech Republic, spanning 1.3 hectares. Floating peat islands dot the lake, supporting rare plant species. Historically, peat was extracted from the bog, intensifying after a paper mill was built in 1895. Peat extraction was limited by the economic crisis in the 1930s, and ended when the Šumava Protected Landscape Area was established in 1963. Today, Chalupská Slať is a haven for diverse flora and fauna. Notable plant species include bog pine, cranberry, grey club-rush, and black sedge. The floating islands host carnivorous round-leaved sundew, mud sedge, and few-flowered sedge. The area is also home to various invertebrates, especially butterflies, and vertebrates like the common viper, viviparous lizard, and water birds. Chalupská Slať is easily accessible, with well-marked trails suitable for all ages. Educational panels provide insights into the wetland's unique ecosystem.
