Discover more about Státní zámek Vimperk

Státní Zámek Vimperk, majestically overlooking the town and the Volyňka River, has origins as a castle dating back to the mid-13th century. Founded to guard the Golden Path from Bavaria to Bohemia, the castle has seen many noble families pass through its halls. Over the centuries, the castle evolved from a Gothic fortress to a Renaissance chateau. Key moments in its history include its capture and destruction in 1619, followed by its reconstruction in the early 17th century. Later modifications were made after a fire in 1857. The castle then became the property of the town in 1948, followed by the Ministry of Environment of the Czech Republic in 1991, and finally the National Heritage Institute in 2015. Today, Státní Zámek Vimperk offers visitors several routes. The Upper Castle tour showcases restored interiors, including a painted beamed ceiling from the early 17th century. The Lower Castle tour focuses on the transformations of the Lower Castle and its gardens. The Museum of the Vimperk Region highlights the history of the area. The castle complex consists of three parts: the Upper Castle, the Lower Castle, and the Haselburg bastion, dating back to 1479. The castle is partially integrated into the town's historic fortifications.
