Discover more about Rotunda of St. Peter and Paul

The Rotunda of St. Peter and Paul, located in Starý Plzenec, stands as one of the oldest and most intact ecclesiastical buildings in the Czech Republic. This Romanesque rotunda, dating back to the 12th century, is a testament to the region's rich history and architectural heritage. Situated atop Hůrka hill, the rotunda overlooks the charming village of Starý Plzenec, the site of the original Přemyslid-dynasty fort of Stará Plzeň (Old Pilsen). The location was a significant center of power, evidenced by the discovery of eight churches within the fortified settlement. While the exact founding date remains debated, it is believed that Prince Spytihněv I commissioned the rotunda sometime between 895 and 915. Some historical accounts suggest the year 905. Over the centuries, the rotunda has undergone several modifications. A rectangular tower was added in the 12th century, followed by a rectangular presbytery around 1585, and a sacristy in the 17th century. Despite these changes, the main nave of Spytihněv's original construction has remained remarkably intact, including its original vault. Today, the Rotunda of St. Peter and Paul is not only a historical landmark but also a serene escape, blending history and natural beauty. Visitors can explore scenic landscapes, hike beautiful trails, and immerse themselves in the tranquil atmosphere.
