Discover more about Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area

The Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area, established in 1965, protects a vast and diverse landscape where the Delaware River has carved its way through the Appalachian Mountains. This natural corridor, straddling the border of Pennsylvania and New Jersey, offers a rich tapestry of history, recreation, and stunning scenery. Originally inhabited by the Munsee people, the area, known historically as the Minisink, witnessed Dutch and French Huguenot colonization in the late 17th century. The recreation area's creation was intertwined with a controversial dam project that was ultimately canceled, preserving the region's natural state. Today, the park boasts over 100 miles of trails, inviting visitors to explore its forests, waterfalls, and riverbanks. The park's diverse landscape provides a habitat for a variety of plant and animal species, including black bears, timber rattlesnakes, and bald eagles. Visitors can engage in a wide array of activities, from hiking and camping to canoeing, kayaking, swimming, and fishing. The Delaware River itself offers opportunities for both tranquil paddling and scenic river trips. Beyond its natural beauty, the recreation area preserves historical and cultural sites, including the Minisink Archaeological Site and Millbrook Village, offering glimpses into the region's past. Whether you're seeking outdoor adventure or a connection to history, the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area offers a memorable experience. Visitor Information: The Park Headquarters, located at 1978 River Road in Bushkill, PA, serves as the main visitor center. Additional visitor centers are located at Dingmans Falls, though this is closed for Summer 2025, and Millbrook Village.
