Paper Mill Park: A Blend of Recreation and History

Paper Mill Park, located in Newark, Delaware, is a vibrant community space with a rich history. The park's location was once home to the Curtis Paper Mill, the oldest continuously operating paper mill in the United States until its closure in 1997. The mill, originally established in 1789 by Thomas Meeteer, produced high-quality paper for over two centuries and even supplied paper for some of the peace treaties that ended World War II.Today, Paper Mill Park offers a variety of recreational activities. Visitors can enjoy well-maintained athletic fields for sports like baseball, soccer, tennis, and basketball. There are also playgrounds for children, paved trails for walking and biking, and picnic areas for family gatherings. The park provides a blend of open green spaces and structured facilities, making it suitable for both active and passive recreation.While the original mill buildings are no longer standing, the park retains some historical elements. The former wastewater ponds have been transformed into clean lakes, and the millrace now serves as a hiking trail. Although the iconic brick smokestack was removed in 2013 due to restoration costs, the park still offers interpretive signage about the mill's history. Paper Mill Park is easily accessible with multiple parking lots, ensuring a convenient visit for all.
