Discover more about Old Town Hall

Wilmington's Old Town Hall, located at 512 N Market St, stands as a testament to the city's rich history and architectural heritage. Constructed in 1798, this Federal-style building served as the center of Wilmington's political and social activities for nearly a century. Styled after Philadelphia's Congress Hall, it hosted elections, town meetings, a subscription library, and even criminal and civil trials. Its basement cells were once feared by lawbreakers. Distinguished guests such as the Marquis de Lafayette and President Andrew Jackson were welcomed at Old Town Hall. The building also marked significant moments in American history, including a memorial for George Washington in 1799 and Henry Clay's body lying in state in 1852. The Delaware Historical Society acquired the building in 1917 and restored it by 1927. Today, the Old Town Hall functions as a museum, offering visitors a glimpse into Wilmington's past through exhibits and displays. It is open to the public Wednesday through Saturday from 12 pm to 5 pm and is included with admission to the Delaware History Museum and Mitchell Center for African American Heritage.
