Limfjordstunnelen holds the distinction of being Denmark's first motorway tunnel, opening on 6 May 1969. The tunnel stretches 582 metres in length and measures 27.4 metres in width, accommodating six lanes of traffic as part of the E45 motorway corridor.

Located in North Jutland at the narrowest point of Limfjorden, the tunnel serves as one of three permanent links connecting Vendsyssel (North Jutlandic Island) with Himmerland and the rest of the Jutland Peninsula. The other two connections are Limfjordsbroen, a bridge in central Aalborg, and Jernbanebroen, the railway bridge slightly west of the city centre. The tunnel passes beneath Limfjorden, a shallow sound that has presented unique engineering challenges. The waterway's shallow nature required careful construction and ongoing maintenance. Between 1996 and 1997, the tunnel underwent significant restoration work, including rectification of the concrete and reinforcement measures, though these efforts were complicated by rust-related issues.

Despite its age, Limfjordstunnelen continues to function as a critical component of Denmark's motorway network. The tunnel's six-lane configuration allows it to handle substantial traffic volumes, and it remains an integral part of the E45 route that connects major cities across Scandinavia.
