Discover more about Mønsted Kalkgruber

Mønsted Kalkgruber, located near Stoholm in central Jutland, Denmark, invites you to explore the world's largest limestone mine, a testament to both natural wonder and human endeavor. For centuries, these mines have been a source of limestone, shaping the landscape and the local economy. Today, they stand as a unique attraction, offering visitors a chance to journey into the earth's depths and discover a hidden world. The history of Mønsted Kalkgruber stretches back over 700 years, with the oldest sections of the mine dating back to the Middle Ages. Initially, local farmers extracted limestone through simple holes in the ground. As demand grew, they began tunneling, creating an intricate network of passages that eventually expanded to over 60 kilometers in length. The limestone extracted from these mines was a crucial building material, used in mortar for churches, cathedrals, and other significant structures throughout Denmark. In 1872, the local farmers sold the rights to Mønsted Kalkværker, marking a shift towards industrial-scale mining. This era saw the introduction of new techniques and technologies, further expanding the mine's reach. Limestone extraction continued until 1953, with the lime plant operating until 1980. In 1997, the Danish Nature Agency acquired the site, initiating efforts to protect and reopen the caves to the public. Today, visitors can explore approximately 4 kilometers of the mine's passages, with 2 kilometers illuminated for easy navigation. As you descend into the cool, damp depths, you'll be immersed in a surreal landscape of towering limestone columns, crystal-clear lakes, and underground streams. The temperature inside the mines remains a constant 8°C (46°F) year-round, so dressing warmly is essential.
