History of Naestved

Origins beside the Suså

Næstved developed beside the Suså, Zealand’s largest river, in a landscape that supported farming, fishing and movement through southern Zealand. The settlement emerged during the early medieval period, and written evidence from the twelfth century records a town already associated with ecclesiastical and commercial activity. Its position near the river and the coast helped connect local production with wider routes across Zealand.
