Discover more about Fort Shirley

Nestled within Dominica's Cabrits National Park, Fort Shirley stands as a powerful testament to the island's rich and often turbulent history. This restored 18th-century British garrison offers an immersive journey into the past, inviting visitors to explore well-preserved ruins and soak in panoramic views. Construction began in 1765 by the British, under Governor Thomas Shirley, as a key defensive structure to protect Dominica's northern coast. The fort was expanded by the French during their occupation from 1778 to 1784. Fort Shirley could house up to 600 soldiers and included gun batteries, cisterns, magazines, storehouses, bakeries, a forge, barracks, and officer quarters. The Georgian architecture, designed by Fraser and Bruce, utilized the natural defenses of the volcanic crater. Fort Shirley is most famously known for the 1802 revolt of African slave soldiers from the 8th West India Regiment. This uprising, protesting poor conditions and fear of being sold back into slavery, led to the emancipation of all slave soldiers in the British Empire by 1807. Abandoned in 1854, restoration began in 1982 under Dr. Lennox Honychurch. Today, parts of Fort Shirley have been restored for various uses, including events and tourism. Visitors can explore the ruins, climb the walls, and imagine life as a soldier while enjoying stunning views of Prince Rupert Bay. The Officer's Quarters has been renovated and hosts weddings, receptions, and events.
