Discover more about Kalinago Barana Aute

The Kalinago Barana Autê, meaning 'Kalinago Village by the Sea,' is a vibrant cultural center located in Bataka, Dominica, offering a unique window into the lives and traditions of the Kalinago people, the island's indigenous community. Established in 2006, this living museum serves as a testament to their rich heritage, inviting visitors to experience their history, craftsmanship, and way of life. Dominica holds the distinction of being the only Eastern Caribbean island with a remaining population of pre-Columbian native Kalinago people. The Kalinago, formerly known as Caribs, migrated from South America to the Caribbean around 1000 AD, settling in Dominica (then Wai'tukubuli) as early as 3100 BC. The Kalinago fiercely resisted Spanish and later European settlers for two centuries. Over time, their population dwindled, and they were compelled to retreat to remote regions of the island as the number of European settlers and enslaved Africans grew. In 1903, a 3,700-acre territory was created for them on the east coast. At Kalinago Barana Autê, visitors can explore traditional 'ajupa' huts, constructed using natural materials like bamboo, leaves, and vines, reflecting a deep connection with nature and sustainable living practices. The village also features a central 'karbet,' a large hut traditionally used for community gatherings and cultural events. Knowledgeable local guides lead tours, sharing stories and insights into the Kalinago culture, bringing their history to life. Witness skilled artisans demonstrating traditional crafts such as basket weaving, pottery, and canoe building. The Kalinago are renowned for their intricate larouma reed baskets, showcasing enduring aspects of their cultural heritage. Engage with the artisans, learn about their techniques, and purchase authentic handicrafts directly from them, supporting the local economy and preserving their traditions. Immerse yourself in the vibrant Kalinago culture through traditional music and dance performances. The rhythmic beats of the 'tambou' drum and the melodies of the flute fill the air as performers showcase Kalinago stories and traditions. Follow trails through lush greenery, discover a small waterfall, and enjoy panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean. The village's location on a cliff overlooking the sea provides a stunning backdrop for your cultural journey.
