Discover more about Fort Shirley

Fort Shirley, nestled within Dominica's Cabrits National Park, stands as a testament to the island's rich and often turbulent history. Constructed in 1765 by the British, the fort was a key defensive structure designed to protect the northern coast of Dominica. The Georgian architecture, designed by Fraser and Bruce, made the most of the natural defenses provided by the volcanic crater in which it was built. Extended by the French during their occupation from 1778 to 1784, Fort Shirley could house up to 600 soldiers and contained more than 50 buildings, including gun batteries, cisterns, powder magazines, and barracks. The fort is also known for the 1802 revolt of slave soldiers from the 8th West India Regiment, which contributed to the emancipation of slave soldiers in the British Empire by 1807. Abandoned in 1854, restoration began in 1982 under Dr. Lennox Honychurch. Today, much of the fort is intact or has been rebuilt, allowing visitors to explore the walls and imagine life when the fort was operational. The Officer's Quarters has been renovated and is now used for events, offering views of Prince Rupert Bay. Fort Shirley connects visitors to an island at peace, offering a glimpse into Dominica's heart and soul.
