Discover more about Galapagos Up las Grietas

Las Grietas is a remarkable geological formation on Santa Cruz Island, a short distance from Puerto Ayora. Translating to 'the cracks' in English, it is a series of volcanic fissures that have created a natural swimming pool with a unique blend of fresh and saltwater. The site is a popular destination for both locals and tourists seeking a refreshing escape from the Galapagos sun. The fissures themselves are deep, narrow crevasses with towering volcanic rock walls on either side. The water at the bottom is a mix of freshwater, filtered from an underground river, and saltwater that seeps in from the ocean. This creates a brackish environment that is both cool and incredibly clear, perfect for swimming and snorkeling. The depth of the water varies, reaching up to 10 meters in some spots. To reach Las Grietas, visitors take a short water taxi ride from the main pier in Puerto Ayora across Academy Bay. From the opposite shore, a well-marked trail leads through varied landscapes, including beaches, lava fields, and cactus forests. The walk to the entrance of Las Grietas takes about 15-20 minutes. Once at Las Grietas, a set of wooden steps descends into the main crevasse, providing easy access to the water. The site is open to visitors from 7:30 am to 5:00 pm. Since 2021, a local guide is required to enter Las Grietas, with tours departing from the entrance every hour at half past the hour, costing $10 per person.
