The Wall of Tears, known locally as El Muro de las Lágrimas, is a significant historical site on Isabela Island in the Galápagos. This massive wall was built between 1946 and 1959 by prisoners of the Ecuadorian government's penal colony. The establishment of the penal colony on the remote Isabela Island made escape virtually impossible.The wall itself stretches over 100 meters and stands approximately 7 meters high. It was constructed entirely by hand using primitive tools. Prisoners were forced to carry heavy, sharp lava rocks from around the island, enduring harsh conditions and inhumane treatment. The construction served no practical purpose other than to punish the inmates.The grueling work led to many deaths, giving rise to the name "Wall of Tears". Local legend says the wall emanates a haunting presence, absorbing the suffering of those who perished during its construction. Some locals believe the Wall of Tears is haunted and that you can hear the wailing and crying of those who died during its construction.Today, the Wall of Tears stands as a poignant reminder of this dark chapter in Isabela Island's history. Visitors can hike to the wall, passing through landscapes that contrast with the grim history. The trail offers encounters with wildlife, including giant tortoises and land iguanas. The site also offers panoramic views of the island.
