Discover more about KV11 Rameses III

Venture into the Valley of the Kings to discover KV11, the tomb of Pharaoh Ramses III, a site celebrated for its elaborate decorations and historical significance. Initially begun by Setnakht (1186–1184 BC), the project was abandoned when workers breached the tomb of Amenmesse (KV10). Work resumed under Ramses III (1184–1153 BC), who modified the corridor's path. Inside, the 188-meter-long tomb is adorned with colorful painted sunken reliefs, featuring traditional ritual texts such as the Litany of Ra and the Book of Gates. These decorations depict Ramses III before various gods, offering a glimpse into ancient Egyptian beliefs and funerary rituals. The tomb consists of a series of corridors leading to a magnificent eight-pillared burial chamber. Known also as "Bruce's Tomb" after its 1768 rediscovery, KV11 has captivated visitors for centuries. The large red granite sarcophagus of Ramses III was removed in the 19th century; its box now resides in the Louvre Museum in Paris, while the lid is in the Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge. The mummy of Ramses III was discovered in the Deir el-Bahri cache in 1881 and is now in Cairo's Egyptian Museum.
