Discover more about Amon Temple

Located in the remote Siwa Oasis, the Temple of Amon, also referred to as the Temple of the Oracle or the Temple of Alexander the Great, stands as a testament to ancient Egyptian religious practices and Siwa's cultural significance. The temple dates back to the 26th Dynasty (664-525 BCE). It was dedicated to the Egyptian sun god Amun-Ra and housed a divine oracle that was absorbed into Greek religion and associated with Zeus. Alexander the Great visited the Oracle in 332 BCE seeking confirmation of his divine status as the son of Zeus (Amun). This declaration legitimized his rule over Egypt. The temple is not always open to the public and requires an appointment with a guide for viewing. While the temple has fallen into disrepair, with faded artwork and carvings, remnants such as statues of Re, Coptic Christian pottery, and Asian carvings can still be seen. The temple complex, situated on a small mountain, provides fabulous views of the oasis. The site includes 45 chambers and a red granite altar.
