5 Day Omo Valley Tribal Tours From Arbaminch to Jinka

A once in a lifetime experience

This tour was the first part of a larger 21 day tour I am doing with Ethio Wildlife Tours. My arrival in Ethiopia was delayed by two days due to an airport strike in Nairobi which required a complete rescheduling of the trip. Then my bag was lost by Kenyan Airways but Melese, the owner was wonderful, rescheduling everything and against all odds finding and sending my bag on to meet me along the way. It was incredible. That was before the tour even started! Then my guide Eshetu and I flew to Jinka and met our lovely driver Tamru and spent the next 4 days exploring the Omo Valley and its extraordinary tribes. It was a once in a lifetime experience to spend time with the Mursi community where some women ornament themselves with lip plates, the Dasenech, where we observed some women constructing their multi material dwellings, and the Hamar people where we were lucky to observe a bull jumping ceremony- an extraordinary rite of passage accompanied with joyful song and dance. It was utterly intriguing and it would have been impossible to reach the remote site without the local knowledge of the Ethio Wildlife team. Next we visited a tiny Hamar hamlet, spending lovely time with a family and the following day we travelled through the spectacular Rift Valley landscape to the terraced fields of the Konso people. It was a huge privilege to spend time with the spiritual leader of the Konso people, King Kalla Gezahagn Woldedawit who was a fascinating leader and a cultural and environmental protector. As an older solo traveller I could not recommend Ethio Wildlife Tours more - for organisation, customer service, local knowledge and friendliness. This was a wonderful start to my trip and I feel very privileged to be with such a good team.

The tour was very interesting. Our guide Samson was very professional and knowledgeable. He explained everything in detail and we learned a lot especially about Lucy and the history of Ethiopia.
