Getting There

  • Car

    From the Danakil Depression, head towards Mekele. The journey will take approximately 4-5 hours. Once in Mekele, take the A2 road heading towards the town of Adigrat. Continue on the A2 for about 2 hours until you reach the junction near the town of Shire. At the junction, take a left onto the A3 road towards Gondar. After approximately 3-4 hours, you will arrive in the town of Debark, which is the gateway to Simien Mountains National Park. The entrance to the park is located just outside Debark. Note that you may have to pay a park entrance fee upon arrival, which varies depending on the type of visit.

  • Public Transportation

    To travel by public transportation, start from the Danakil Depression and head to Mekele. Take a minibus or a bus from the nearest town in the depression to Mekele, which may take about 3-4 hours. Once in Mekele, catch a bus heading towards Gondar. The bus ride to Gondar will take approximately 6-8 hours. From Gondar, you will need to find a local minibus or taxi to Debark. The drive from Gondar to Debark will take about 2-3 hours. Make sure to confirm the bus schedules in advance, as they can be irregular. Upon arrival in Debark, you will find the entrance to Simien Mountains National Park just outside the town.

    For a more comfortable and direct route, consider hiring a taxi or a private car from anywhere in Danakil Depression to Debark. This option is more expensive but will save time.
