Entoto View: Addis Ababa's Panoramic Escape

Entoto View, located on the Entoto Mountains, provides a breathtaking panorama of Addis Ababa. Rising 3,200 meters above sea level, Mount Entoto is more than just a scenic spot; it's a place steeped in Ethiopian history and culture. Emperor Menelik II, who founded Addis Ababa, used Entoto as his headquarters and built his palace here. The mountain was considered sacred and is home to several monasteries and celebrated churches, including Saint Raguel and Saint Mary. The Entoto Maryam Church, with its octagonal design, is particularly notable, and Menelik II was crowned Emperor here in 1889. Visitors can explore the church and a museum showcasing artifacts from Menelik II's reign. The mountain is covered in eucalyptus trees, imported from Australia during Menelik II's reign. These trees contribute to Addis Ababa sometimes being referred to as the "lung of Addis Ababa". Today, Entoto Natural Park covers a large area of the mountain, offering well-maintained walking and cycling trails for visitors to enjoy the natural environment. The park also has several cafes and restaurants. Entoto View is not just a place for sightseeing; it's an opportunity to immerse yourself in Ethiopian culture. You may see local artisans selling traditional crafts or witness a traditional Ethiopian coffee ceremony. The Ethiopian Space Science Society also has an observatory on the summit.
