Discover more about Saksun, vandfald og historie

Saksun, a remote village on the island of Streymoy in the Faroe Islands, is a destination that feels plucked from a fairytale. With a population of around 10-15 inhabitants, this tiny village is known for its stunning natural amphitheater formed by steep mountains surrounding a tidal lagoon. Originally a natural harbor, a storm in the 1600s blocked the inlet with sand, creating the lagoon, called Pollurin, that defines Saksun today. At low tide, it's possible to walk along the lagoon's sandy shore. The village is also known for its turf-roofed houses, a traditional Faroese design providing insulation and blending seamlessly with the landscape. The Saksunar Kirkja, the village church, is a highlight. Consecrated in 1858, it was originally located in the village of Tjørnuvík. The residents of Saksun dismantled the church and carried it over the mountains to rebuild it in their own village. The church's black-tarred exterior and white window frames create a striking contrast against the green landscape. Saksun offers a unique opportunity to experience the tranquility and beauty of the Faroe Islands. Visitors can explore the village, hike the surrounding trails, and immerse themselves in the peaceful atmosphere. Dúvugarðar, an active sheep farm and museum, provides a glimpse into traditional Faroese rural life. Keep in mind that much of the land is privately owned, and a small fee may be required to access certain trails.
