Discover more about Slættanes

Slættanes, nestled on the northern coast of Vágar Island in the Faroe Islands, is a hauntingly beautiful ghost town that evokes a sense of tranquility and reflection. Founded in 1835, the village once thrived as a small, isolated community, reaching its peak population of around 130 residents between 1945 and 1950. The settlers relied on fishing, bird catching, and small-scale cultivation for sustenance. However, life in Slættanes was challenging. The village lacked essential infrastructure such as roads and electricity, making it increasingly difficult for residents to maintain their way of life. Over time, families began to migrate to nearby villages in search of better opportunities and modern conveniences. By 1965, the last inhabitants had left, leaving behind a collection of empty houses and a silent testament to a community's struggle against the forces of modernization. Today, Slættanes offers visitors a unique opportunity to step back in time and experience the atmosphere of a pre-modern Faroese settlement. The absence of cars and the tranquility of the surroundings create a sense of peaceful isolation. The original houses, though now used as summer homes, stand as a reminder of the families who once lived and worked in this remote location. Exploring Slættanes provides a profound connection to the past and a deeper understanding of the challenges faced by those who lived in the remote outposts of the Faroe Islands.
