Discover more about The Nix

The Nix sculpture, also known as Nykurin in Faroese, is a silver statue located on the northern tip of Lake Sørvágsvatn on the island of Vágar. Created by local artist Pól Skarðenni and unveiled in 2017, the sculpture represents a mythical water creature from Faroese folklore. The Nix is a dangerous creature that can transform into different shapes, often appearing as a beautiful horse to lure people, especially children, closer to the water. Once someone touches the Nix, they become stuck, and the creature drags them to a watery end. However, the Nix loses its power if someone shouts its name aloud. According to legend, the Nix lives in almost all lakes in the Faroe Islands and enjoys luring people to a watery grave. One story tells of children playing by Leitisvatn lake who encountered a beautiful horse. As they climbed on its back, the horse ran towards the deep part of the lake. One of the children, unable to pronounce his brother Niclas's name correctly, shouted "Brother Nix!" causing the creature to lose its power and allowing the children to escape. The sculpture serves as a reminder of these ancient tales and the connection between the Faroese people and their mythical past. The sculpture's reflective surfaces shimmer in the sunlight, enhancing the serene beauty of the surrounding landscape.
