Pajakkakoski Rapids Trail: Nature's Power in Kuhmo

The Pajakkakoski Rapids Trail offers an immersive experience into the heart of Kuhmo's natural beauty. This easily walkable path traces the banks of the Pajakkakoski Rapids, the largest free-flowing rapids in the Kainuu region. The trail is approximately 1 kilometer long and presents captivating views of the wild, rushing waters. Historically, the Pajakkakoski Rapids played a vital role in Kuhmo's economy. In the 1800s, tar boats were rowed through these waters towards Oulu. The rapids were also cleared in 1870 to ease the passage of boats and prevent log jams, with a stone pier, or "möljä," constructed to aid in towing. Today, a wooden path crosses the möljä, offering a unique vantage point for fishing and admiring the rapids. For those seeking a longer trek, a trail from near the bridge extends to the Suvanto lean-to, a distance of about 2 kilometers, where you can enjoy a meal by a campfire. The Suvanto lean-to is also accessible by car.
