Varisköngäs Waterfall: A Kainuu Gem

Varisköngäs Waterfall, considered one of the most beautiful in the Kainuu region, is a captivating natural attraction near Suomussalmi. The waterfall boasts an 11-meter drop and is particularly impressive during the spring floods. The surrounding old-growth forest and moss-covered rocks create a fairytale-like atmosphere.Visitors can admire the falls from various vantage points. A short 300-meter marked path from the parking area leads to the waterfall. Steps along the path provide access to both the top and the base of the falls. At the top, a fireplace offers a spot to relax and enjoy the view. The base provides a closer perspective of the cascading water and surrounding nature.Varisköngäs is also part of the longer Haverinen-Varisköngäs hiking trail, offering opportunities for extended exploration. The 30km Varisjärvi hiking trail, starting from Kiannon Kuohut Spa Hotel in Suomussalmi, also provides access when the ground is clear of snow. Note that there is no winter maintenance on the direct route to the falls.
