Discover more about Paljakka Strict Nature Reserve

The Paljakka Strict Nature Reserve, located in the Kainuu region of Finland, offers a unique glimpse into an untouched wilderness. Established in 1956, this 29.5 square kilometer reserve is characterized by its old-growth spruce forests, some of which reach up to 40 meters in height. These forests are home to diverse flora and fauna, including Finland's only orchid species, Cypripedium calceolus. The reserve stands out as the only area in the Arctic Lakeland with large expanses of untouched forest. What makes Paljakka even more special is that, unlike most strict nature reserves which are closed to the public, visitors are welcome to explore its natural beauty. However, strict rules apply to preserve its delicate ecosystem. Visitors can traverse the Paljakka Strict Nature Reserve trail, a roughly six-kilometer path that guides you through the heart of the reserve. Hiking, skiing, and snowshoeing are permitted on the marked trail, allowing for exploration in various seasons. Camping and making open fires are strictly prohibited to protect the environment. Picking berries, mushrooms, plants, or stones is also forbidden. The forests of Paljakka are dominated by spruce trees, which have adapted to the heavy snow loads of the region by growing narrower than their counterparts in southern Finland. These ancient spruces, some estimated to be around 500 years old, create a unique forest ecosystem. Keep an eye out for local wildlife, including large carnivores like lynx, wolves, and bears. For those seeking longer hikes, trails in the surrounding areas offer expanded alternatives. Popular options include the 6km Kalastuspolku Fishing Path, the 10km Maisemareitti Scenic Route, and the 14km Ilveskierros Lynx tour which passes close to the nature reserve.
