Discover more about Tiilikkajärvi National Park

Tiilikkajärvi National Park, located in the municipalities of Rautavaara and Sotkamo, is a testament to Finland's commitment to preserving its natural heritage. Established in 1982, the park spans 34 square kilometers, encompassing a diverse landscape of wilderness-like lake, river, and esker ecosystems, as well as open aapa bogs surrounding Lake Tiilikka. The park's most prominent feature is Lake Tiilikka, a barren lake with sandy beaches and clear waters. The Pohjoisniemi and Kalmoniemi eskers almost divide the lake in half, creating picturesque landscapes. These eskers were formed over 10,000 years ago by meltwaters carving tunnels as the ice sheet retreated. Tiilikkajärvi National Park is also rich in history. The Treaty of Teusina in 1595 established a border between Sweden and Russia through Lake Tiilikka, and a border stone in the lake still bears the symbols of the two countries. The Tiilikanautio farm, inhabited until the early 20th century, provides a glimpse into the region's past. Today, the park offers a variety of activities for nature enthusiasts. Over 20 km of marked trails wind through the park, including the popular Uiton kierto circular trail. Visitors can hike, ski, canoe, and snowshoe, immersing themselves in the park's serene environment. Camping is permitted only at designated sites. The park is also home to diverse bird species, including the Siberian jay, brambling, and yellow wagtail.
