Discover more about Kärnäkoski Fortress

Kärnäkoski Fortress, situated in the tranquil landscapes of Savitaipale, is a captivating historical site that immerses travelers in Finland's military heritage. Built between 1791 and 1793 by Russia, the fortress was part of a larger fortification system designed to protect St. Petersburg from Swedish advances. Empress Catherine the Great entrusted General Alexander Suvorov with the construction of this defensive chain. The fortress itself was strategically positioned on an isthmus between Lake Saimaa and Lake Kuolimojärvi, allowing control over both road and water traffic. Designed by French engineering officers, who fled the French Revolution to Russia, the fortress was built according to the traditional French bastion system. However, limited space dictated an irregular shape, enhancing its integration with the terrain. The fortress included three demi-bastions on its western and southern sides, along with three outworks called ravelins. In addition to the main fortress, the Kärnäkoski redoubt (Mountain Fort) and Partakoski redoubt provided further support. Despite its strategic importance, Kärnäkoski Fortress guarded the Russian border for only 15 years. After the Finnish War in 1809, the Russian-Swedish border shifted westward, diminishing the fortress's military value. Tsar Nicholas I closed the fortress in 1835, leading to the auctioning of buildings and equipment, and the neglect of its walls. Today, the Finnish National Board of Antiquities and the Ministry of the Environment have recognized the fortress as a nationally significant cultural-historic landmark. Restoration efforts have returned the fortress to its former glory, with repaired walls and a cleared surrounding area. Visitors can explore the fortress grounds, discover guidance signs, and enjoy the scenic trails. Nearby attractions include the Kärnäkoski rapids, an old barge harbor, a mill dating back to the 1830s, and a double-arch stone bridge from 1886. For those interested in hiking, the Orrainpolku trail offers a challenging route through the rugged landscape. Please note that in the summer of 2025, the Kärnäkoski bridge will be under repair, and the mill will be closed for safety reasons.
