Discover more about Partakoski Sawmill and Mill

The Partakoski Sawmill and Mill, nestled in the village of Partakoski, Savitaipale, offers a fascinating look into Finland's industrial past. Established in 1750 on the Partakoski rapids between Lake Kuolimojärvi and Lake Saimaa, the sawmill harnessed the power of the flowing water for its operations. The site is a testament to the ingenuity and resourcefulness of early industrialists in the region. The sawmill was founded by merchants from Hamina: Jobs Fabritius, Mauno Giösling, and brothers Juho and Erik Bruum. They recognized the potential of the Partakoski rapids, which consist of three sections: Ahvenkoski, Siikakoski, and Saunakoski. In 1752, a mill was added downstream from the sawmill to grind crops for local farmers. While the sawmill and mill are no longer operational, they stand as a reminder of the area's industrial heritage. Visitors can explore the site and imagine the bustling activity that once took place there. The Partakoski rapids themselves are a beautiful natural attraction, with clear waters and lush surroundings. The area is popular for photography and birdwatching. Today, the Partakoski Village Association maintains and preserves the mill and sawmill as cultural heritage sites.
