Discover more about Oulu Cathedral

Oulu Cathedral stands as a testament to Oulu's resilience and rich history. The original church, completed in 1777, was a tribute to King Gustav III of Sweden and named Sofia Magdalena's Church after his wife. Designed by Daniel Hagman, it was the second largest stone church in Finland at the time, accommodating Oulu's entire population of 2,400. In 1822, the Great Fire of Oulu ravaged the city, leaving only the stone walls of the church standing. The cathedral was reconstructed in 1832 under the guidance of Carl Ludvig Engel, a renowned architect who also designed the Helsinki and Lapua cathedrals. Engel incorporated a new central dome, roof, and tower, resulting in the Empire-style architecture seen today. The belfry was added later, in 1845. Throughout its history, the cathedral's interior has evolved, with the most recent classical-functionalistic design dating back to 1932. Renovations have aimed to restore the original Empire-style spirit while preserving valuable historical elements. Archaeological excavations have uncovered remains of an earlier wooden church from the 1600s, adding another layer to the site's historical significance. Today, Oulu Cathedral remains an integral part of the city's landscape and a cherished symbol for the community.
